the Layne hat

Made on request by a guy of mine (a friend, don't get any ideas) who noted that his gray slouchy hat "wasn't slouchy anymore." I thought to myself, I could fix that. And yes, I am wearing a Star Wars shirt, and yes, I am taking photos of myself in the laundry room. It's a lonely world at 11 at night.

Materials:
less than one skein Lion Brand Wool Ease
5.5mm - 16" circulars (opt) and a set of 5.5mm dpn's
Stitch marker

Gauge: 18 stitches = 4 inches

Cast on 86 stitches, place marker for the beginning of each round.
Work k1, p1 ribbing for seven rounds.
Knit 2 rounds.
Purl 1 round.
Knit 5 rounds, Purl 1 round.
Knit 5 rounds and Purl 1 round for the remainder of the entire hat.
Continue k5/p1 rounds until the hat measures 9" from cast-on edge.
Remember, keep the k5/p1 rounds in place! Talking about decreases, it is assumed you will continue knitting or purling each row as needed and dec will be a knit 2 together or a purl 2 together, depending on the round. For example, if the pattern says (10, dec) it would mean knit or purl 10 stitches (as appropriate for the round) and knit or purl the next 2 together. If you are using circulars, switch to dpn's at this point.

10, [9, dec] 3 times, 10, [9, dec] 3 times. (80 stitches)
[8, dec] around (72 stitches)
[7, dec] around (64 stitches)
[6, dec] around (56 stitches)
[5, dec] around (48 stitches)
[4, dec] around (40 stitches)
[3, dec] around (32 stitches)
[2, dec] around (24 stitches)
[1, dec] around (16 stitches)
dec around (8 stitches)
dec around (4 stitches)
Bind off, weave in ends.

Enjoy! And please let me know if you find any errors or need anything clarified.
